Sigmoidoscopy with Polyp Removal in Windhoek

A camera examination of the lower bowel with removal of any polyps found during the procedure.

About this service

Sigmoidoscopy with polyp removal is a camera examination of the lower bowel that also allows any polyps found along the way to be removed during the same procedure, and it is offered in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. A thin, flexible scope is passed into the lower bowel to look for the cause of symptoms such as bleeding or changed bowel habit, and if a polyp is seen it can usually be removed there and then and sent for testing.

The procedure is done in our on-site day theatre with sedation for your comfort. Your doctor will explain the findings and any polyp removed once the procedure is complete.

What to expect

  • Some bowel preparation beforehand to clear the lower bowel
  • Sedation or light anaesthesia is usually given for comfort
  • The procedure itself generally takes 15 to 30 minutes
  • Any polyps removed are sent for laboratory testing
  • Mild bloating or cramping afterwards is common and usually settles quickly

Who is it for?

You may be advised to have this if you are dealing with:

  • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
  • A recent change in bowel habit that has not resolved
  • Unexplained lower abdominal or rectal discomfort
  • A polyp found on a previous examination that needs removal
  • A family history of bowel polyps or bowel cancer
