About this service
Sigmoidoscopy with polyp removal is a camera examination of the lower bowel that also allows any polyps found along the way to be removed during the same procedure, and it is offered in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. A thin, flexible scope is passed into the lower bowel to look for the cause of symptoms such as bleeding or changed bowel habit, and if a polyp is seen it can usually be removed there and then and sent for testing.
The procedure is done in our on-site day theatre with sedation for your comfort. Your doctor will explain the findings and any polyp removed once the procedure is complete.
What to expect
- Bowel preparation beforehand so the lower bowel is clear enough to spot any polyps
- Sedation or light anaesthesia from the anaesthetist keeps you comfortable while polyps are removed
- Polyps are removed through the scope and sent to the laboratory for testing
- Mild cramping or a little spotting of blood afterwards is normal and usually settles within a day

Frequently asked questions
Does removing a polyp during a sigmoidoscopy hurt?
The bowel lining has no pain nerves, so removing a polyp is not felt, and sedation keeps you comfortable in any case. Some cramping or bloating afterwards is normal and usually settles within a day.
What happens to a polyp after it is removed?
Every polyp removed is sent to the laboratory to check its type and rule out abnormal cells. Your doctor discusses the report with you at a follow-up visit and advises whether any further checks are needed.
Can I go back to work the day after a polyp removal?
Most people feel back to normal by the next day. Your doctor may ask you to avoid heavy lifting and to watch for any significant bleeding for a few days, and will advise if you need extra time off.
