Sigmoidoscopy in Windhoek

About this service

A sigmoidoscopy is an endoscopic examination available in Windhoek that looks at the rectum and the lower part of the colon using a thin, flexible camera. It helps your doctor investigate symptoms such as rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habit or persistent lower abdominal discomfort, and can identify or rule out conditions like polyps, inflammation or haemorrhoids. The procedure is generally quicker than a full colonoscopy because it examines a shorter section of bowel.

At Eastgate Clinic, sigmoidoscopy is performed in our on-site day theatre, with your GP arranging referral and reviewing results in our rooms. Your doctor will advise on any preparation needed beforehand.

What to expect

• Some bowel preparation beforehand, as advised by your doctor
• A relatively short procedure performed in our on-site day theatre
• Sedation or anaesthesia may be used depending on your doctor's assessment
• Mild bloating or cramping afterwards is common and usually settles quickly
• Follow-up consultation in our rooms to discuss findings and any biopsy results
