A gastroscopy, or upper endoscopy, is offered in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic's on-site day theatre to examine the oesophagus, stomach and upper part of the small bowel. Using a thin, flexible camera passed down through the mouth, your doctor can directly see the lining of these organs, helping to investigate symptoms like persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss or stomach pain.

It is a common way to diagnose conditions such as ulcers, reflux disease or inflammation, and small tissue samples can be taken during the procedure if needed. The examination is done under sedation or light anaesthesia, so you will not be aware of the scope passing through, and most people go home the same day once they have recovered.

What to expect

• You will need to fast for several hours beforehand, as instructed ahead of time.
• Sedation or light anaesthesia is given so you are comfortable and unaware during the scope.
