It is a common way to diagnose conditions such as ulcers, reflux disease or inflammation, and small tissue samples can be taken during the procedure if needed. The examination is done under sedation or light anaesthesia, so you will not be aware of the scope passing through, and most people go home the same day once they have recovered.

What should I not eat before a gastroscopy?
Your stomach needs to be empty so the doctor gets a clear view, so you will be asked to stop eating for several hours beforehand and take only small sips of water until a set time. We confirm the exact fasting instructions when you book.
Will I be awake during a gastroscopy?
Most patients are given sedation or light anaesthesia by the anaesthetist, so you are drowsy or asleep and do not remember the scope passing down. A mild sore throat for a day afterwards is common.
