About this service
A diagnostic sigmoidoscopy is a short endoscopic examination of the lower bowel using a rigid or flexible scope to investigate symptoms such as bleeding, pain, or a change in bowel habit, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. The scope allows your doctor to look directly at the lining of the lower bowel and rectum, helping to identify the cause of your symptoms and decide on the next steps in your care.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre, often with sedation for your comfort. Your doctor will discuss the findings with you once the examination is complete.
What to expect

How do I prepare for a diagnostic sigmoidoscopy?
Preparation is lighter than for a full colonoscopy. Usually an enema or a short course of laxative on the day is enough to clear the lower bowel, and you may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand. We confirm the exact steps when you book.
Are biopsies taken during a diagnostic sigmoidoscopy?
Small tissue samples may be taken if the doctor sees an area that needs closer examination, and you will not feel this. The samples go to the laboratory and the results are discussed with you afterwards.
