About this service
Plantar fasciotomy in Windhoek is a day-surgery procedure that releases part of the plantar fascia, the tight band of tissue along the sole of the foot, to relieve persistent heel pain. It is generally considered for chronic plantar fasciitis when rest, stretching, physiotherapy or other conservative treatments have not brought sufficient relief over several months.
By releasing tension in the fascia, the procedure aims to reduce pain and allow more comfortable walking and standing. Eastgate Clinic performs plantar fasciotomy in our on-site day theatre for patients whose heel pain has not settled with other care.
What to expect
- Your doctor will confirm the diagnosis and check that conservative treatment has been fully tried first
- Part of the plantar fascia is released through a small cut at the heel in our on-site day theatre
- Anaesthesia for the foot is chosen with the anaesthetist and discussed with you beforehand
- Some swelling and tenderness in the heel is normal for a period after surgery
- A gradual return to walking and normal footwear is guided by your doctor

When is surgery considered for plantar fasciitis?
Only after months of proper conservative care such as stretching, orthotics, supportive shoes, physiotherapy and sometimes injections have failed to settle the heel pain. Your doctor will go through what you have already tried before discussing plantar fasciotomy.
Can I walk after plantar fasciotomy?
You can usually put some weight on the foot soon after surgery, often in a protective shoe or boot, but the heel will be tender and swollen for a while. Walking distance and a return to normal footwear are increased gradually on your doctor's advice.
Where is plantar fasciotomy done at Eastgate Clinic?
The procedure takes place in our on-site day theatre in Windhoek with an anaesthetist and theatre staff present, and you go home the same day. The type of anaesthesia is agreed with you beforehand at your consultation in our rooms.
