A limb cast is applied in our rooms at Eastgate Clinic in Windhoek to immobilise and support an arm or leg while a fracture or injury heals. Keeping the limb stable is an important part of allowing bones and soft tissue to recover correctly, and your doctor will assess the injury, often alongside imaging, before applying a cast suited to the location and severity of the injury.
The cast is moulded to fit and support the limb, and your doctor will explain how to care for it, what movement to avoid, and when to return for review or removal.

- Your doctor examines the injured arm or leg, often with an X-ray, before deciding on a cast
- Padding is applied first and the cast is moulded to fit the limb while it sets
- You are shown how to keep the cast dry and which warning signs mean you should come back

Frequently asked questions
Will I need an X-ray before a cast is put on my arm or leg?
Usually, yes. Your doctor examines the limb first and often arranges imaging so the cast is matched to the type and position of the fracture. If the injury is already confirmed, bring any recent X-ray reports with you.
How do I look after a plaster cast at home?
Keep the cast dry, do not push anything inside it to scratch, and keep the limb raised in the first few days to limit swelling. Come back to our rooms promptly if your fingers or toes go numb, turn pale or blue, or the cast feels too tight.
When can my cast be removed?
That depends on which bone is injured and how it heals, so your doctor sets review dates rather than a fixed timeline. At each visit the fit of the cast and the healing progress are checked, and removal is arranged once the bone is stable enough.
