Joint manipulation under anaesthetic is a procedure in which a stiff or frozen joint, such as the shoulder, is gently moved through its full range of motion under general anaesthetic to restore movement, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. Conditions like frozen shoulder can severely limit movement and cause ongoing pain, and when physiotherapy and other treatments have not fully restored motion, manipulation under anaesthetic can help break down stiffness while you are fully relaxed and pain-free.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under general anaesthesia. Your doctor will assess your joint and discuss whether this approach is suitable for you.

What is manipulation under anaesthetic for a frozen shoulder?
While you are asleep under general anaesthesia, the doctor moves the shoulder firmly through its full range to stretch and free the tightened joint capsule. Because you are fully relaxed, the joint can be moved further than would be possible while awake.
Will I have to stay overnight after joint manipulation under anaesthetic?
Normally not. The manipulation itself is brief, and after recovering from the general anaesthetic in our on-site day theatre you can usually go home the same day. You will need someone to drive you home.
What happens after manipulation to keep the shoulder moving?
Physiotherapy starting soon after the procedure is essential, otherwise the joint can stiffen again. Expect some soreness for a few days, and follow the exercise plan your doctor and physiotherapist give you to hold on to the gained movement.
