About this service
Bone spur, or exostosis, removal is a surgical procedure available in Windhoek to remove a bony overgrowth that has developed on a bone, particularly from a less accessible site that needs careful surgical access. Bone spurs can form after injury, joint wear or as part of certain underlying conditions, and can cause pain, restricted movement or irritation of surrounding tissue. Surgery removes the excess bone to relieve these symptoms.
At Eastgate Clinic this procedure is performed in our on-site day theatre, with consultation and follow-up managed by your GP in our rooms. Your doctor will assess your imaging and advise on the surgical plan.
What to expect

Frequently asked questions
Can a bone spur be removed without surgery?
A spur is solid bone, so it cannot be dissolved or drained away. Padding, footwear changes, anti-inflammatories or injections can ease the symptoms, and surgery is generally reserved for spurs that keep causing pain or blocking movement despite these measures.
Is bone spur removal done as day surgery?
Yes. The operation takes place in our on-site day theatre with an anaesthetist and theatre staff present, and most patients go home later the same day. The type of anaesthesia depends on where the spur is and will be discussed at your consultation.
How long does it take to recover after a bone spur is removed?
Expect swelling and tenderness at the site for a while, and if the spur was on the foot you may need to limit weight-bearing at first. The wound and your range of movement are checked at follow-up, and your doctor will guide the return to normal activity.
