About this service
Ganglion or bursa removal is surgical removal of a small ganglion cyst or bursa, common lumps that form near joints or tendons, done as day surgery, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. A ganglion is a fluid-filled lump that often appears near the wrist or hand, while a bursa is a small fluid sac that can become swollen near a joint, and both can cause discomfort, restrict movement, or be a cosmetic concern when they grow. Surgery removes the lump when it is bothersome or has not resolved on its own.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under local or regional anaesthesia. Your doctor will examine the lump and advise on the best approach.
What to expect
- An examination to confirm the type and location of the lump
- The cyst or bursa is removed whole, including its sac, through a small incision in our on-site day theatre
- Local or regional anaesthesia for most small lumps, with an anaesthetist present throughout
- Some swelling and stiffness near the site is normal during recovery

Frequently asked questions
Will a ganglion cyst go away on its own?
Some do, and some shrink after being drained with a needle, but ganglions often refill because the sac that produces the fluid is still there. Surgical removal takes out the sac itself, which gives the best chance of it not returning.
What is the difference between a ganglion and a bursa?
A ganglion is a jelly-filled cyst that grows from a joint capsule or tendon sheath, most often on the wrist or hand. A bursa is a small cushioning sac near a joint that can swell and become tender, for example at the elbow. Your doctor examines the lump to tell which it is and whether removal is appropriate.
Do I need to be put to sleep for ganglion or bursa removal?
Usually not. Small lumps are removed under local or regional anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre, with an anaesthetist present to keep you comfortable, and you leave the same day. The wound is dressed and checked at a follow-up visit.
