About this service
A chalazion excision is a minor day-theatre procedure to remove a meibomian cyst, a small painless lump that forms when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. Most chalazia settle with warm compresses, but a cyst that persists, grows, or affects vision or comfort may need surgical removal.
The procedure is done under local or short general anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre, so you do not need to travel to a separate surgical hospital. Your doctor will assess the eyelid first and advise whether excision is the right next step, or whether further treatment can be tried before surgery.
What to expect
- A short assessment of the eyelid before the procedure is booked
- Performed under local anaesthetic, or a brief general anaesthetic for children
- The cyst is drained from the inside of the eyelid, leaving no visible skin cut in most cases
- Some swelling and bruising around the eyelid is normal for a few days

Frequently asked questions
Can a chalazion go away without surgery?
Many do. Warm compresses several times a day and gentle lid massage often clear a blocked gland over a few weeks, so your doctor may suggest trying this first before booking an excision.
How is a chalazion removed in day theatre?
The eyelid is numbed with local anaesthetic, or a short general anaesthetic is used for children. The cyst is opened from the inside of the lid and its contents cleared, so there is usually no visible skin scar.
What happens after meibomian cyst excision?
You go home the same day, often with a pad over the eye for a few hours. The lid may be swollen and bruised for a few days, and your doctor will advise on ointment and when to return for a check.
