About this service
Ureteric, or JJ, stent insertion is a procedure available in Windhoek that places a small flexible tube inside the ureter to keep it open and allow urine to drain freely from the kidney to the bladder. It's commonly used when the ureter is blocked or narrowed, often because of a kidney stone, swelling or after certain urological surgery. The stent is usually temporary and is removed once the underlying problem has been treated.
At Eastgate Clinic this procedure is performed in our on-site day theatre, with your GP coordinating referral and follow-up in our rooms. Your doctor will explain how long the stent needs to stay in place.
What to expect
- A scan showing the blockage in the ureter is reviewed before the stent is planned.
- Under anaesthesia a fine scope is passed into the bladder and the soft stent is threaded up the ureter, curling at each end to hold it in place.
- You go home the same day and receive a stent card with the date it is due to be removed.
- Removal is a short second visit, and your doctor treats the underlying cause in the meantime.

You may be advised to have this if you are dealing with:
- A kidney stone blocking or narrowing the ureter
- Flank pain linked to a urinary blockage
- Swelling or narrowing of the ureter needing temporary support
- Recovery support after certain kidney or ureter procedures
- Referral from your GP or urologist for urinary drainage issues
Frequently asked questions
Why would I need a JJ stent?
A stent keeps urine flowing from the kidney when the ureter is blocked by a stone, swelling or scarring, and it protects the kidney from pressure and infection until the cause is treated.
How long does a JJ stent stay in?
Most stay for a few weeks, occasionally up to three months. Your doctor gives you the removal date, and it is important not to miss it because an overdue stent can crust up.
What does a ureteric stent feel like?
You will not feel it while resting, but many people notice urgency, a dull flank ache when passing urine or a little blood. These settle once the stent is removed.
