Circumcision involves surgically removing the foreskin, and it may be recommended for medical reasons such as tightness that causes pain or recurrent infection, or chosen for personal, cultural or religious reasons. It is carried out under anaesthesia so you or your child feel nothing during the procedure itself, and recovery generally involves some swelling and tenderness for a period afterwards. Your surgeon will explain aftercare in detail before you go home.

What to expect

• Your doctor examines you first and confirms that the surgical route, rather than a clamp method, is the right choice for your age and foreskin.
• The visiting surgeon removes the foreskin under anaesthesia given by our anaesthetist, with dissolving stitches closing the wound.
• You go home the same day with a light dressing and written instructions on keeping the area clean and dry.
• Expect swelling and bruising for about a week, and avoid sport and sexual activity until your surgeon clears you.
