TURP (Prostate Surgery) in Windhoek

About this service

TURP, or trans-urethral resection of the prostate, is a surgical treatment offered in Windhoek for men with an enlarged prostate that is affecting urination. It involves removing excess prostate tissue through the urethra, without any external cuts, to relieve blockage and improve urine flow. Men are usually referred for TURP when medication no longer controls symptoms such as a weak stream, frequent night-time trips to the bathroom, or difficulty starting to urinate.

At Eastgate Clinic, TURP is carried out in our on-site day theatre by a visiting urologist, with your GP available in our rooms for referral and aftercare. Your doctor will advise if TURP is right for you.

What to expect

• Your GP arranges a urine flow test and PSA blood test before referring you to the visiting urologist.
• The urologist removes the obstructing prostate tissue through a scope passed along the urethra, so there are no external cuts.
• A catheter and bladder washout run for a short period afterwards while any bleeding settles.
• Frequency and urgency improve over a few weeks, and heavy lifting is avoided for about a month.

• A weak or slow urine stream
• Frequent urination, especially waking at night to urinate
• Difficulty starting or stopping urination
• A feeling that the bladder never fully empties
• An enlarged prostate diagnosed by your doctor that is not controlled by medication
