What to expect

What is a small parts ultrasound used for?
It is a high-resolution scan of a small, shallow structure such as the thyroid gland, the testes or a lump just under the skin. Because these areas lie close to the surface, a high-frequency probe gives very fine detail. Your doctor uses it to measure nodules, check blood flow and decide whether anything needs further investigation.
Does a thyroid ultrasound need any preparation?
None at all, and you can eat and drink normally before it. You will lie with your neck slightly extended over a small pillow while the probe is moved across the front of the throat. Nodules, their size and their appearance are recorded for your doctor to review with you.
Is a testicular ultrasound embarrassing or painful?
The scan is done privately in our rooms with a towel draped for modesty, and it takes only a short while. Gel and a light probe are used, and while a swollen or tender testis may feel sore under gentle pressure, the scan itself does no harm. It is the quickest way to check pain, swelling or a lump, so please do not put it off.
