About this service
An abdominal ultrasound is an imaging scan performed in our rooms at Eastgate Clinic in Windhoek that gives your doctor a detailed look at the organs within the whole abdomen, which can include the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and other structures. Using sound waves rather than radiation, the scan helps investigate abdominal pain, digestive symptoms, or findings from a previous examination that need a closer look.
You will lie down while a probe is moved gently over your abdomen, and your doctor will review the images and discuss what they show once the scan is complete, in the same visit at our practice.
What to expect
- Fast for around six hours beforehand so the gallbladder is full and there is less bowel gas in the way
- You lie on your back and sometimes on your side while gel and a probe are moved across the whole abdomen
- You may be asked to hold a deep breath now and then so the liver and kidneys move into clearer view
- The liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and main blood vessels are each checked in turn
- Your doctor reviews the images with you straight afterwards and arranges blood tests or referral if needed

Frequently asked questions
How long should I fast before an abdominal ultrasound?
Usually about six hours with nothing to eat, so a morning appointment after an overnight fast works well. Fasting keeps the gallbladder full and reduces bowel gas, which makes the liver, gallbladder and pancreas much easier to see. Sips of water are fine unless your doctor says otherwise.
Which organs are checked in a whole abdomen ultrasound?
The scan looks at the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, both kidneys and the large blood vessels running through the abdomen. Your doctor may also check for free fluid or an enlarged organ. Anything unusual is explained to you straight after the scan.
Can an abdominal ultrasound find gallstones?
Yes, ultrasound is the standard first test for gallstones and usually shows them clearly, along with any thickening of the gallbladder wall. It can also help explain pain under the right ribs or after fatty meals. If stones are found, your doctor will talk through what that means for you and whether a referral is needed.
