About this service
A pelvic ultrasound is an imaging scan performed in our rooms at Eastgate Clinic in Windhoek to get a clear look at the pelvic organs, which can include the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures. Depending on what your doctor needs to assess, the scan may be done transvaginally or transabdominally, using sound waves to build a real-time picture without radiation.
It is commonly used to investigate pelvic pain, irregular periods, suspected cysts or fibroids, or as part of a broader gynaecological assessment. Your doctor will discuss the findings with you once the scan is complete, in the same visit.
What to expect
- We tell you whether to arrive with a full or empty bladder, depending on whether the scan is abdominal or transvaginal
- You lie on the couch while a probe is moved over the lower abdomen, or a slim covered probe is placed gently in the vagina
- The uterus, ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures are viewed on screen in real time, with no radiation
- A transvaginal scan can be paused or stopped at any point if you feel uncomfortable
- Your doctor discusses what the scan shows before you leave and advises on any follow-up

Frequently asked questions
Should I have a full bladder for a pelvic ultrasound?
For a scan through the abdomen, a full bladder helps push the bowel aside and gives a clearer view of the uterus and ovaries, so drink water beforehand and do not empty your bladder. For a transvaginal scan you will be asked to empty it first. We will tell you which applies when you book.
What can a pelvic ultrasound show?
It gives your doctor a real-time picture of the uterus, its lining, the ovaries and the surrounding pelvic structures. Cysts, fibroids, thickened lining and free fluid can often be seen, which helps explain pelvic pain or irregular bleeding. Your doctor goes through the images with you in the same visit.
Is a transvaginal ultrasound painful?
A slim probe is placed gently in the vagina with a protective cover and gel. Most women find it a little awkward rather than painful, and it can be stopped at any point if you are uncomfortable. If you would prefer an abdominal scan only, tell your doctor and the options will be discussed with you.
