About this service
Repair of vaginal laceration or trauma is a surgical procedure to close and heal a tear or injury to the vaginal tissue, most often related to childbirth, and it is provided in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. Tears can happen during a vaginal delivery or from other trauma, and while small tears may heal on their own, larger or deeper ones need surgical repair to control bleeding, restore normal anatomy, and support healing.
The repair is carried out in our on-site day theatre under local, regional, or general anaesthesia depending on the extent of the injury. Your doctor will assess the tear and advise on the most appropriate repair and aftercare.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a vaginal tear needs stitches?
Bleeding that does not stop with pressure, a tear you can see gaping, or pain that gets worse rather than better all need assessment. Your doctor examines the area and decides whether stitches are needed.
Can a vaginal tear be repaired days after the injury?
Yes, although repair is easier and heals better when done early. If a tear was missed or has not healed, book with us and your doctor will assess whether repair in our day theatre is needed.
What should I avoid while a vaginal laceration heals?
Avoid intercourse, tampons and swimming until your doctor confirms the area has healed, usually a few weeks. Rinse with warm water after using the toilet and pat dry rather than rubbing.
