About this service
Surgical management of a miscarriage, sometimes called uterine evacuation, is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic's on-site day theatre for an incomplete miscarriage that has not resolved on its own. When pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus after a miscarriage, it can cause ongoing bleeding, pain or infection risk, and surgery may be recommended if this does not clear naturally or with medication. The procedure removes the remaining tissue from the uterus under anaesthesia, allowing your body to recover and reducing the risk of complications.
This is understandably a difficult and emotional time, and our team aims to handle it with as much care and privacy as possible. Your doctor will talk you through what to expect and what recovery involves before the procedure.
What to expect
- Your doctor confirms, usually with a scan, that surgical management is the right option.
- You are asleep under anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre while the remaining tissue is gently removed through the cervix.
- You are usually home the same day, with someone to drive you and stay with you that evening.
- Some bleeding and cramping afterwards is normal as your body recovers; your doctor explains what to watch for.

Frequently asked questions
How soon after a miscarriage is surgical management done?
Once a scan confirms tissue remains in the uterus, the procedure can usually be arranged within days, or sooner if bleeding is heavy. Your doctor will explain whether waiting or medication is a reasonable alternative in your case.
What happens to the tissue removed during uterine evacuation?
Tissue can be sent to the laboratory if your doctor feels it will help explain the miscarriage. You are welcome to ask about this beforehand, and to tell us any wishes you have regarding the tissue.
When will my period return after surgical miscarriage management?
For most women a normal period comes back within four to six weeks. Bleeding that becomes heavier, fever or strong pain in the meantime should be checked promptly.
