Perineal tear repair is a surgical procedure available in Windhoek to treat a tear of the perineum, the area between the vagina and anus, that has occurred during childbirth. Frequently asked questions
How long do perineal stitches take to heal?
The stitches dissolve on their own, usually within a few weeks, and the area feels much more comfortable after the first fortnight. Deeper tears take longer, and your doctor will tell you what to expect for your degree of tear.
How do I care for a perineal tear at home?
Keep the area clean by rinsing with warm water after using the toilet, change pads regularly, and take pain relief as advised. Plenty of fluids and fibre help avoid constipation, which makes bowel movements more comfortable.
Can a perineal tear be repaired if it was missed after delivery?
Yes. If pain, gaping or leakage is noticed days or weeks after birth, book a check with us. Your doctor can assess the tear and arrange repair in our on-site day theatre where needed.
