About this service
Ovarian cyst or tumour removal is a surgical procedure available in Windhoek to treat a cyst or growth on the ovary that is causing symptoms, growing larger, or raising concern on scans. Many ovarian cysts resolve on their own, but surgery becomes an option when a cyst is persistent, large, painful or looks abnormal on ultrasound. Removing the cyst or tumour also allows the tissue to be checked to confirm what it is.
At Eastgate Clinic this surgery is performed in our on-site day theatre, with consultation, scans and follow-up managed by your GP in our rooms. Your doctor will discuss the findings and the right approach for you.
What to expect
- A consultation with ultrasound or scan review in our rooms before surgery
- General anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre, most often with a keyhole approach
- Where possible, only the cyst is removed to preserve healthy ovarian tissue
- Mild abdominal discomfort and bloating afterwards is common for a few days
- Follow-up appointment to discuss results and any further care needed

Frequently asked questions
Do all ovarian cysts need to be removed?
No. Many simple cysts shrink on their own, and your doctor may suggest a repeat scan in a few months first. Surgery is considered when a cyst is large, persistent, painful or looks unusual on ultrasound.
Will removing an ovarian cyst affect my fertility?
Wherever possible only the cyst is removed and the ovary is left in place, so fertility is usually preserved. If a whole ovary has to be removed, the remaining ovary generally continues to release eggs.
Is ovarian cyst removal done by keyhole or open surgery?
Smaller cysts are usually removed by keyhole, while a very large cyst or one that looks suspicious may need an open cut. Your surgeon decides after reviewing your scans and explains the approach beforehand.
