About this service
An oophorectomy in Windhoek is the surgical removal of one or both ovaries, usually recommended when an ovarian cyst, tumour or other condition cannot be managed safely without surgery. It may be advised after imaging shows a persistent or concerning ovarian mass, severe endometriosis, or as part of managing certain gynaecological cancers.
Removing the affected ovary can relieve pain, prevent complications such as twisting or rupture, and, where relevant, remove abnormal tissue for further testing. What to expect
- Pelvic ultrasound and tumour-marker blood tests to characterise the ovarian problem before surgery
- General anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre, with keyhole or open surgery depending on the findings
- One or both ovaries are removed and sent for laboratory examination
- Overnight observation may be advised, with several weeks of gradual return to full activity
- A discussion about hormones and menopause if both ovaries are removed
Who is it for?

Frequently asked questions
Will removing an ovary put me into menopause?
Removing one ovary does not usually bring on menopause, because the remaining ovary keeps producing hormones. Removing both before natural menopause does, and your doctor will discuss hormone replacement and bone health with you beforehand.
Is oophorectomy done by keyhole or open surgery?
Many ovary removals can be done laparoscopically through small cuts, which means a quicker recovery. A larger mass or previous surgery may need an open incision. The doctor decides the approach with you after reviewing your scans.
Do I need a referral before ovary removal surgery in Windhoek?
