Laser treatment of the vulva or vagina is laser therapy for abnormal tissue of the vulva or vagina, often following a colposcopy finding, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. When abnormal cells or lesions are found on the vulva or vagina, laser treatment offers a precise way to remove or treat the affected area while limiting damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the area and extent of treatment needed. Your doctor will discuss the findings and explain whether laser treatment is suitable for you.
What to expect
- A colposcopy or careful examination to map every area that needs treatment
- Local anaesthetic for small areas, or general anaesthesia when the treatment is more extensive
- The laser removes or destroys the abnormal tissue while sparing healthy skin nearby
- A raw, sore area for one to two weeks, eased with salt-water baths and loose clothing
- A follow-up examination to confirm healing, with longer-term checks because these conditions can recur

Frequently asked questions
What conditions is vulval or vaginal laser treatment used for?
It treats abnormal cells or lesions on the vulva or in the vagina found at colposcopy, such as VIN or VAIN, and some persistent warty lesions. It is a treatment for diagnosed abnormalities, not a cosmetic or tightening procedure.
What is recovery like after laser treatment of the vulva?
The treated skin is raw for a week or two, so expect soreness, swelling and some discharge. Salt-water baths, loose cotton underwear and pain relief help, and your doctor will tell you when intercourse and exercise can resume.
Will I need a general anaesthetic for laser treatment of the vagina?
It depends on how large the area is. Small vulval lesions can be treated under local anaesthetic, while wider or vaginal treatment is usually done under general anaesthesia with an anaesthetist in our day theatre. Either way you go home the same day.
