Laser treatment of the cervix uses a laser or harmonic scalpel to treat abnormal cervical tissue identified on colposcopy, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. This precise technique removes or destroys abnormal cells on the cervix while limiting damage to surrounding healthy tissue, and it is used when screening has shown a change that needs treatment to prevent progression.

Frequently asked questions
How is laser treatment of the cervix different from LLETZ?
Both treat abnormal cells found on colposcopy. LLETZ removes a piece of tissue with a heated loop, while laser or a harmonic scalpel vaporises or removes the abnormal area with very fine control and little damage to surrounding tissue. Your doctor will explain which suits your findings.
Does laser treatment of the cervix hurt?
Local anaesthetic is used, so you may feel warmth or mild cramping rather than pain. Afterwards there can be period-type cramps and a watery discharge for a few weeks, which simple pain relief manages well.
When will I know if the laser treatment of my cervix worked?
Healing is checked at a follow-up visit, and a repeat smear or HPV test some months later confirms that the abnormal cells have cleared. Your doctor will set the dates for you.
