About this service
Hysteroscopy with polyp removal is a telescope examination of the uterus combined with removal of a uterine polyp, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. Uterine polyps are growths in the lining of the womb that can cause irregular bleeding, heavy periods, or spotting between periods, and a hysteroscope allows your doctor to see the polyp directly and remove it during the same procedure. This approach is precise and avoids the need for open surgery.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under general or regional anaesthesia. Your doctor will discuss the findings and any laboratory results once they are available.
What to expect
- A pelvic ultrasound beforehand showing the size and position of the polyp
- The polyp is removed through the hysteroscope without any cuts to your abdomen
- Anaesthesia is given by an anaesthetist in our on-site day theatre, and you go home the same day
- The polyp goes to the laboratory and your doctor discusses the result with you when it is back
- Spotting for a few days is usual, and heavy bleeding or fever should be reported

- A polyp identified on ultrasound within the uterine cavity

Frequently asked questions
Is a uterine polyp cancerous, and will it be tested after removal?
Most uterine polyps are benign, but the only way to be sure is to examine the tissue. Every polyp we remove is sent to the laboratory, and your doctor will go through the report with you at your follow-up visit.
Will removing a uterine polyp stop my abnormal bleeding?
Polyps are a common cause of spotting between periods, heavy periods and bleeding after menopause, so removing one often settles the bleeding. It can take a cycle or two to judge, and if bleeding continues your doctor will look for other causes.
How soon can I return to work after hysteroscopic polyp removal?
Most women are back to normal activities within a day or two. You may have some spotting and mild cramping, and it is sensible to avoid tampons, swimming and intercourse until the bleeding has stopped.
