About this service
Hysteroscopy with adhesion division is a telescope examination of the uterus combined with the division of internal scar tissue, known as adhesions, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. Adhesions can form inside the uterus after previous surgery, infection, or pregnancy complications, and they may cause irregular or absent periods, pelvic pain, or difficulty conceiving. During the procedure, a hysteroscope allows your doctor to see and carefully divide the scar tissue to restore normal uterine anatomy.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under general or regional anaesthesia. Your doctor will assess your history and symptoms before advising on this treatment.
What to expect
- A review of any previous uterine surgery, infections or pregnancy losses so your doctor knows what to expect inside
- General or regional anaesthesia given by an anaesthetist, as adhesion division needs a still, pain-free patient
- Scar bands are cut under direct hysteroscopic vision to reopen the cavity
- Light spotting and period-like cramps for a few days as the lining settles
- A follow-up scan or repeat look may be suggested to check the cavity has stayed open
Who is it for?
You may be advised to have this if you are dealing with:
- Absent or very light periods after previous uterine surgery
- Difficulty conceiving following a D&C or uterine infection
- Recurrent miscarriage linked to suspected uterine scarring
- Pelvic pain associated with known intrauterine adhesions
- A diagnosis of Asherman's syndrome or similar scarring

What causes scar tissue inside the uterus, and does hysteroscopy fix it?
Adhesions usually form after a D&C, uterine infection or pregnancy complications, and they can stop the lining from building up normally. During hysteroscopy your doctor sees the bands directly and divides them under vision. Many women find their periods return afterwards, though results vary and your doctor will discuss what is realistic for you.
Can I get pregnant after hysteroscopic adhesion division?
Dividing adhesions is often done to improve the chance of conceiving, but no clinic can promise a pregnancy. Your doctor will usually suggest waiting for at least one normal cycle and may arrange a follow-up scan to check the cavity has stayed open.
Will I be awake for hysteroscopy with adhesion division?
No. Because dividing scar tissue takes more time and precision than a simple look inside, it is done under general or regional anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre with an anaesthetist present. You go home the same day once you have recovered from the anaesthetic.
