About this service
Hysteroscopic myomectomy is telescope-guided surgery to remove a fibroid from inside the cavity of the uterus, without any external cuts, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. A thin telescope, called a hysteroscope, is passed through the cervix into the uterus, allowing your doctor to see and remove fibroids that are growing into the uterine cavity and often causing heavy bleeding or fertility difficulties.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under general or regional anaesthesia. Your doctor will assess the fibroid's size and position on ultrasound before advising whether this approach is suitable.
What to expect
- An ultrasound or scan to confirm the fibroid's size and position
- General or spinal anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre, with the fibroid shaved away through the cervix
- Fluid used to expand the uterus is measured carefully throughout the procedure
- Some cramping and light bleeding afterwards is normal for a few days
- Your doctor will advise on recovery time and any fertility follow-up

You may be advised to have this if you are dealing with:

Frequently asked questions
Which fibroids can be removed hysteroscopically?
Only fibroids that bulge into the uterine cavity, called submucosal fibroids, can be reached through the cervix. Fibroids in the muscle wall or on the outside need a different approach, which your surgeon will explain.
Is there any cut for a hysteroscopic myomectomy?
No. Everything is done through the cervix with a telescope, so there are no abdominal wounds and recovery is usually quick. Some cramping and bleeding for a few days is expected.
Can removing a fibroid hysteroscopically improve fertility?
Removing a fibroid that distorts the cavity can improve the chances of implantation and reduce miscarriage risk for some women. Your surgeon may recommend a check scan afterwards to confirm the cavity has healed.
