About this service
A hymenectomy is the surgical opening or removal of the hymen when it is obstructing normal function, such as blocking menstrual flow or causing pain, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. In some cases the hymen is thicker or more rigid than usual, which can cause pain, block menstrual blood, or make daily life or intercourse uncomfortable, and a hymenectomy corrects this.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under general or local anaesthesia. Your doctor will assess your symptoms and examine the area before advising whether a hymenectomy is appropriate.

Frequently asked questions
What problems does a hymenectomy treat?
A hymen that is imperforate, has only tiny openings, or is unusually thick can block periods, make tampons impossible or cause pain with intercourse. Hymenectomy opens or removes the tissue to relieve this.
Is a hymenectomy embarrassing or painful to have done?
You are examined and treated privately, and the procedure is done under anaesthesia so you feel nothing at the time. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is usual.
How long after a hymenectomy can I use tampons or have intercourse?
Wait until the area has healed, generally two to four weeks, and until your doctor has checked it at follow-up. Gentle daily hygiene with warm water helps healing.
