A hydrocoelectomy is a day-theatre operation performed in Windhoek to remove a hydrocoele or spermatocoele, a fluid-filled swelling around the testicle or epididymis. Many men notice a painless lump or heaviness in the scrotum that grows slowly over time, and surgery is usually recommended once it becomes uncomfortable or unsightly. The operation drains the fluid and removes the sac lining so it can't refill.

What to expect

• An ultrasound confirms whether the swelling is a hydrocoele or a spermatocoele before surgery is planned.
• The surgeon opens the scrotum, drains the fluid and removes or turns back the sac lining so it cannot refill.
• You go home the same day wearing supportive underwear, with dissolving stitches in the wound.
• Bruising and firmness in the scrotum ease over two to three weeks, and your doctor reviews the wound in our rooms.
