About this service
Endometrial ablation is a day-theatre procedure available in Windhoek that removes or destroys the lining of the womb to treat heavy menstrual bleeding that hasn't responded well to other treatments. It's generally considered for women who have completed their family, as it isn't suitable if future pregnancy is planned. By reducing or removing the lining that builds up each cycle, it can significantly lighten or stop periods for many women.
At Eastgate Clinic this procedure is performed in our on-site day theatre, with consultation and follow-up managed by your GP in our rooms. Your doctor will discuss whether ablation is a suitable option for you.
What to expect
- A consultation to discuss your bleeding pattern and treatment history in our rooms
- General or spinal anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre while the lining is treated through the cervix
- Some cramping and watery discharge for a few weeks afterwards is common
- A period of rest and gentle activity, as advised by your doctor
- Follow-up appointment to review your bleeding pattern after the procedure
Who is it for?
You may be advised to have this if you are dealing with:
- Heavy periods that disrupt daily life
- Menstrual bleeding not controlled by medication
- Having completed your family and not planning further pregnancy
- Anaemia linked to ongoing heavy bleeding
- Referral from your GP or gynaecologist for treatment options
Frequently asked questions
Will my periods stop completely after endometrial ablation?
Many women have much lighter periods and some stop altogether, but results vary and a few need further treatment later. Your doctor will explain what is realistic for you.
Can I still get pregnant after endometrial ablation?
Pregnancy is unlikely but not impossible, and would be high-risk because the lining is damaged. Reliable contraception is still needed afterwards, which is why ablation suits women who have completed their family.
Who is not suitable for endometrial ablation?
It is not suitable if you want children in future, if the uterus is enlarged by large fibroids, or if there are abnormal cells in the lining. Your doctor will usually take a sample of the lining first to check.
