About this service

Dilation and curettage, commonly known as a D&C, removes tissue from the lining of the uterus, and it is performed in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic's on-site day theatre. During the procedure, the cervix is gently widened and instruments are used to remove tissue from the uterine lining, which can be done to investigate abnormal bleeding, treat retained tissue after a miscarriage, or as part of managing other gynaecological conditions. It is a well-established and generally straightforward procedure carried out under anaesthesia, meaning you are not aware of it happening.

Any tissue removed can be sent for laboratory analysis if needed, giving your doctor useful diagnostic information. Most patients go home the same day, with some light bleeding and cramping expected during recovery.

What to expect

• Your doctor explains the reason for the D&C and what it aims to achieve.
• Anaesthesia is given, so you are not aware during the procedure.
• The cervix is gently widened and the uterine lining is sampled or cleared.
• Light bleeding and cramping for a few days afterwards is normal.
