About this service
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, performed under anaesthesia in our day theatre for medical or personal reasons, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. It may be recommended for medical reasons such as recurrent infections, tightness that makes the foreskin difficult to retract, or other conditions affecting the foreskin, and it is also chosen electively for personal, cultural, or religious reasons.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under local or general anaesthesia depending on age and preference. Your doctor will discuss your reasons for the procedure and the most suitable anaesthesia option for you or your child.
What to expect
- A brief assessment to confirm the procedure is appropriate
- Local anaesthetic for adults, or general anaesthetic often used for children
- The procedure itself is usually quick, often well under an hour
- Some swelling and tenderness for several days is normal during healing
- Your doctor will advise on wound care and when normal activity can resume
Who is it for?
You may be advised to have this if you are dealing with:
- Recurrent infections of the foreskin or glans
- A tight foreskin that will not retract normally (phimosis)
- Painful erections or discomfort linked to the foreskin
- Personal, cultural, or religious reasons for circumcision
- A parent seeking circumcision for a child for medical or other reasons
