About this service
A cervical wedge biopsy is a larger, wedge-shaped tissue sample taken from the cervix for diagnosis, used when a bigger or deeper sample is needed than a standard punch biopsy provides, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. This more thorough sample helps your doctor investigate abnormal cells more fully, particularly when earlier results are unclear or a wider area needs examining.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre, usually under local or regional anaesthesia. Your doctor will explain why a wedge biopsy is recommended in your case and discuss the results once available.
What to expect
- An examination to plan the area and size of tissue to be sampled
- Local or regional anaesthesia depending on the extent of the biopsy
- A wedge of tissue is cut from the cervix with a scalpel in our on-site day theatre
- Some bleeding, spotting, or cramping afterwards is normal for a few days
- Your doctor will discuss results and any further treatment needed

Frequently asked questions
Why would I need a wedge biopsy instead of a punch biopsy?
A wedge biopsy removes a larger, deeper piece of the cervix, useful when punch samples were unclear, when the abnormal area is wide, or when an obvious growth needs a thorough sample. It gives the laboratory more tissue to examine.
Will a cervical wedge biopsy need stitches?
Sometimes a dissolving stitch is placed to control bleeding from the larger cut. It does not need removing, and your doctor will tell you if anything was left in place.
What can I not do after a cervical wedge biopsy?
Skip intercourse, tampons, baths and swimming for about two weeks while the cervix heals. Light activity is fine, but if bleeding becomes heavy or you develop a fever, contact us.
