A cervical wedge biopsy during pregnancy is a larger cervical tissue sample taken safely while pregnant to investigate abnormal cells more thoroughly, and it is offered in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. It is used when a smaller biopsy has not given a clear enough answer, or when the abnormality found during pregnancy needs a fuller sample to guide care.

The procedure is performed in our on-site day theatre, with special care taken to protect the pregnancy throughout. Your doctor will discuss the findings and plan any further monitoring needed for the rest of your pregnancy.

What to expect

• A colposcopy examination to plan the biopsy area during pregnancy
• Local or regional anaesthesia used with extra care given the pregnancy
• The procedure itself is usually brief
• Some spotting or mild cramping afterwards is common and usually settles
