About this service
A cervical wedge biopsy during pregnancy is a larger cervical tissue sample taken safely while pregnant to investigate abnormal cells more thoroughly, and it is offered in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. It is used when a smaller biopsy has not given a clear enough answer, or when the abnormality found during pregnancy needs a fuller sample to guide care.
The procedure is performed in our on-site day theatre, with special care taken to protect the pregnancy throughout. Your doctor will discuss the findings and plan any further monitoring needed for the rest of your pregnancy.
What to expect
- A colposcopy examination to plan the biopsy area during pregnancy
- Local or regional anaesthesia used with extra care given the pregnancy
- The biopsy is kept as small as the diagnosis allows, with bleeding controlled before you leave theatre
- Some spotting or mild cramping afterwards is common and usually settles
- Your doctor will discuss results and monitor your pregnancy closely afterwards

When is a wedge biopsy done during pregnancy?
Only when a smaller biopsy has not settled whether a serious abnormality is present and the answer cannot wait until after delivery. Your doctor, and where needed a visiting specialist, weigh this carefully with you.
Could a cervical wedge biopsy in pregnancy harm my baby?
The biopsy stays on the surface of the cervix and does not enter the womb, so the baby is not touched. The main risk is bleeding from the cervix, which is why it is done in theatre where it can be controlled.
What monitoring happens after a wedge biopsy in pregnancy?
You are observed until bleeding has settled, and your pregnancy care continues with closer checks of the cervix. Any cramping, bleeding or fluid loss afterwards should be reported straight away.
