About this service
A cervical punch biopsy is a small tissue sample taken from the cervix, usually during colposcopy, to investigate abnormal cells found on a screening test, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. If your pap smear or screening result shows abnormal cells, a punch biopsy allows your doctor to examine a small piece of cervical tissue under the microscope for an accurate diagnosis.
The procedure is done in our on-site day theatre, often as an outpatient step within colposcopy. Your doctor will explain the results once they are back and discuss any further care that may be needed.
What to expect
- A colposcopy examination to identify the area to be sampled
- Local anaesthesia or none at all, depending on the area involved
- Each sample takes a moment, felt as a brief pinch or cramp
- Light spotting or mild cramping afterwards is common and short-lived
- Your doctor will discuss the results and any follow-up treatment needed

What is a cervical punch biopsy?
A tiny piece of cervix, a few millimetres across, is pinched off with a small instrument during colposcopy. It is sent to the laboratory to grade any abnormal cells more precisely than a smear can.
How many samples are taken in a punch biopsy?
One to three samples are usual, depending on how many abnormal-looking areas the colposcope shows. Each takes only a moment.
Can I drive home after a cervical punch biopsy?
Yes. The biopsy is usually done with little or no anaesthetic, so you can drive yourself and go back to work the same day if you feel fine. Bring a pad for light spotting.
