About this service
Cervical dilation for stenosis is a procedure to gently widen a narrowed cervical canal, relieving the blockage known as cervical stenosis, and it is offered in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. Stenosis can develop after surgery, childbirth, infection, or with age, and it may cause painful periods, difficulty with fertility treatment, or trapped menstrual blood. Dilation opens the narrowed canal to relieve symptoms and restore normal flow.
The procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre under regional or general anaesthesia. Your doctor will assess your symptoms and history before recommending dilation.
What to expect
- An assessment of your symptoms and cervical canal before the procedure
- Spinal or general anaesthesia so the narrowed canal can be opened without discomfort
- Slim dilators of increasing size gently open the canal, sometimes with ultrasound guidance
- Mild cramping or spotting afterwards is common and usually settles quickly
- Your doctor will advise on follow-up to check the canal remains open

Frequently asked questions
What causes cervical stenosis?
The cervical canal can narrow after LLETZ or a cone biopsy, after menopause, following infection or scarring, or occasionally from birth. Trapped menstrual blood, painful periods or difficulty with fertility procedures often bring it to light.
Can cervical stenosis come back after dilation?
It can, particularly after menopause when tissue is thinner. Your doctor may suggest a follow-up check, and sometimes a small device is left in place for a while to keep the canal open.
Is cervical dilation done under anaesthesia?
Yes. A narrowed canal is uncomfortable to open awake, so dilation is done under spinal or general anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre with an anaesthetist present. You go home the same day.
