About this service
A cervical cone biopsy is a procedure available in Windhoek that removes a cone-shaped piece of cervical tissue to diagnose or treat abnormal cervical cells. It's typically recommended when a pap smear or colposcopy shows changes that need a deeper tissue sample than a standard biopsy can provide, or when earlier treatment hasn't fully cleared abnormal cells. The tissue removed is examined closely to guide any further treatment.
At Eastgate Clinic this procedure is performed in our on-site day theatre, with consultation and follow-up managed by your GP in our rooms. Your doctor will explain your results and what a cone biopsy involves.
What to expect
- A consultation in our rooms to explain why a deeper cone-shaped sample is recommended over a smaller biopsy
- General or spinal anaesthesia with an anaesthetist in our on-site day theatre
- Some bleeding or discharge for a couple of weeks afterwards is common
- Avoiding tampons, intercourse and certain activities during healing, as advised by your doctor
- Follow-up appointment to discuss the results and any further care

Frequently asked questions
How is a cone biopsy different from LLETZ?
A cone biopsy removes a deeper, cone-shaped piece of the cervix, reaching further up the cervical canal than a loop excision. It is chosen when abnormal cells extend higher up or a fuller sample is needed.
What happens after the cone biopsy results come back?
The laboratory checks whether the abnormal cells were fully removed at the edges. If so, you usually just need follow-up smears, and if not, your doctor will discuss further treatment.
Will I need a stitch or packing after a cone biopsy?
Sometimes a stitch or dissolvable packing is placed to control bleeding, and your doctor will tell you if anything needs to come out. Expect discharge or spotting for a couple of weeks.
