Skin lesion excision and repair is a procedure performed in our rooms at Eastgate Clinic in Windhoek to surgically remove a skin lesion and close the resulting wound with direct suturing. This approach is used for lesions that need to be removed for medical or diagnostic reasons, with the tissue sometimes sent for further analysis depending on your doctor's assessment.
Your doctor will examine the lesion beforehand, discuss the plan with you, and carry out the removal under local anaesthetic before carefully suturing the wound. Aftercare advice and, if relevant, a plan for suture removal will be given before you leave.
What to expect
- Your doctor marks the lesion and plans the cut so the scar follows the skin's natural lines
- Local anaesthetic is injected around the lesion so the excision is not painful
- The lesion is cut out with a small margin of surrounding skin
- The edges of the wound are brought together and closed with stitches
- Keep the dressing dry as advised and return for suture removal on the date given

Is the removed skin lesion sent for testing?
Where there is any doubt about what the lesion is, the tissue is sent to a laboratory for examination. Your doctor will tell you if this applies and arrange to go through the result with you.
When are the stitches removed after skin lesion excision?
Timing depends on where the lesion was, as stitches on the face come out sooner than those on the back or legs. Your doctor will book the removal visit before you leave our rooms.
