Nailbed excision is a minor surgical procedure performed in our rooms at Eastgate Clinic in Windhoek to remove part of the nailbed, commonly used to treat a persistently ingrown nail. When an ingrown nail keeps causing pain, infection, or does not improve with conservative care, removing the affected part of the nailbed can bring lasting relief.
Your doctor will assess the toe or finger, numb the area, and carefully carry out the excision before dressing the wound. Aftercare guidance is given before you leave, and the procedure is usually completed within a single visit to our rooms.
What to expect
- Your doctor examines the ingrown edge and any infection around it
- The toe or finger is numbed with a local anaesthetic block at its base
- The offending strip of nail and the matching part of the nailbed are removed
- A dressing is applied and you are advised on footwear while it heals
- You go home the same day and return for a wound check if needed

Frequently asked questions
Is nailbed excision the same as removing an ingrown toenail?
It goes a step further. As well as removing the ingrown edge, part of the nailbed is taken away so that section of nail cannot grow back, which is why it is used for nails that keep becoming ingrown.
How long is the toe sore after nailbed excision?
The toe is usually tender for a few days and may weep a little while it heals. Wear open or loose shoes, keep the dressing clean and follow your doctor's advice on when to start soaking the toe.
Will the nail look normal after nailbed excision?
The nail will be slightly narrower on the treated side because that strip of nailbed is gone. Most people find this barely noticeable and far preferable to repeated ingrown infections.
