A pudendal nerve block is a local anaesthetic injection offered in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic to numb the area around the birth canal. It is most commonly used during the later stages of labour, when an episiotomy, an assisted delivery with forceps or vacuum, or perineal repair is needed and effective pain relief is required quickly. The anaesthetic is injected near the pudendal nerve, which supplies sensation to the vulva, perineum and lower vagina, numbing the region within minutes.
It can also be used outside childbirth for certain gynaecological procedures involving the perineal area. The block is performed by your attending doctor in our rooms or during delivery, alongside any other pain relief methods you are already using.

Does a pudendal block affect my baby?
The anaesthetic acts locally around the pudendal nerve, so very little reaches the baby. It does not make you drowsy and does not slow labour, which is one reason it is chosen for delivery.
Can I still push with a pudendal nerve block?
Yes. The block numbs the vulva and perineum but does not affect your ability to push, so you can work with your doctor through delivery.
