Cervical Cerclage (Shirodkar Suture) in Windhoek

About this service

Cervical cerclage, also known as a Shirodkar suture, is a procedure available in Windhoek where a stitch is placed around the cervix during pregnancy to help support it and reduce the risk of premature labour in women at risk of an incompetent cervix. It is usually recommended after a history of pregnancy loss or based on findings from an ultrasound scan of the cervix during pregnancy. The stitch is typically removed later in pregnancy or at delivery.

At Eastgate Clinic this procedure is performed in our on-site day theatre, with your GP and obstetric team coordinating consultation and follow-up in our rooms. Your doctor will explain the timing and monitoring involved.

What to expect

• A consultation and ultrasound review in our rooms before the procedure
• Performed under anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre
• Some cramping and spotting afterwards is common and usually settles
• Regular monitoring throughout pregnancy following the procedure, as advised by your doctor
• The stitch is removed later in pregnancy or at delivery, as planned by your doctor
