Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap) in Windhoek

About this service

A lumbar puncture, sometimes called a spinal tap, is a medical procedure available in Windhoek used to collect a sample of spinal fluid for diagnosis, or to give medication directly into the spinal space. It involves inserting a fine needle into the lower back, below the level of the spinal cord, to reach the fluid-filled space around it. Doctors request a lumbar puncture to investigate conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord or nervous system, or as part of certain treatments.

At Eastgate Clinic this procedure is carried out in our on-site day theatre, with your GP arranging referral and reviewing results in our rooms. Your doctor will explain why it's being recommended for you.

What to expect

• A consultation to explain why spinal fluid analysis is being recommended and what preparation is needed
• The lower back is numbed with local anaesthetic and a fine needle is placed between the bones of the spine in our on-site day theatre
• You lie curled on your side or sit leaning forward and keep still for a short period during the procedure
• A mild headache or backache afterwards is possible and usually settles with rest
• Follow-up consultation in our rooms to discuss the results
