A D-Dimer test is a blood test done at Eastgate Clinic in Windhoek used to help rule out blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, when your doctor is investigating relevant symptoms. D-Dimer is a substance that rises when the body is breaking down a blood clot, so a normal result can be reassuring, while a raised result usually prompts further investigation to confirm or exclude a clot.
A small blood sample is taken in our rooms, and your doctor will explain the result alongside your symptoms and decide on any next steps, which may include referral for further imaging if needed.

Frequently asked questions
What does a negative D-Dimer test mean?
A normal D-Dimer in someone at low risk makes a blood clot unlikely, which can save you from further scans. Your doctor will still consider your symptoms and risk factors before ruling a clot out.
Does a high D-Dimer mean I definitely have a clot?
No. D-Dimer also rises after surgery, in pregnancy, with infection and with age. A raised result means a clot cannot be excluded, so your doctor will usually arrange an ultrasound or CT scan.
When is a D-Dimer test used for leg swelling?
If one calf is swollen, painful or warm, especially after travel, surgery or immobility, your doctor may use a D-Dimer to help decide whether a deep vein thrombosis needs to be investigated.
