About this service

A lymph node biopsy for suspected tuberculosis is a procedure available in Windhoek that surgically removes a lymph node to confirm or rule out tuberculosis infection. It's usually recommended when a lymph node has become swollen, firm or persistent, and other tests haven't given a clear answer. Removing and examining the node allows an accurate diagnosis, which then guides the right treatment.

At Eastgate Clinic this biopsy is performed in our on-site day theatre, with consultation and follow-up managed by your GP in our rooms. Your doctor will explain the results and next steps once they're available.

What to expect

• A consultation and examination of the swollen node in our rooms
• Performed under anaesthesia in our on-site day theatre
• Mild swelling and tenderness at the biopsy site afterwards is expected
• The removed node is sent for laboratory analysis to confirm diagnosis
• Follow-up appointment in our rooms to discuss results and treatment

Who is it for?

You may be advised to have this if you are dealing with:

• A persistent swollen lymph node in the neck, armpit or elsewhere
• A firm, painless lump that hasn't gone down over time
• Other symptoms such as night sweats, weight loss or fatigue
• Suspected tuberculosis needing tissue confirmation
• Referral from your GP after other tests were inconclusive
