About this service
Excision of a malignant soft tissue tumour is a surgical procedure performed in Windhoek to remove a cancerous growth from muscle, fat or other soft tissue in the body. Careful planning is needed to remove the tumour with an adequate margin of healthy tissue around it, which helps reduce the chance of the cancer returning. Patients are usually referred for this surgery after a lump has been investigated and confirmed as malignant through biopsy or imaging.
At Eastgate Clinic this excision is performed in our on-site day theatre, with your GP coordinating referral, results and follow-up in our rooms. Your doctor will discuss the full treatment plan with you.

Frequently asked questions
Why is extra healthy tissue removed around a soft tissue tumour?
Cancer cells can extend beyond the visible lump, so the surgeon takes a rim of normal tissue with it. The laboratory then checks whether the edges are clear, which tells your team whether further treatment is needed.
How long do the results take after tumour excision?
The pathology report usually takes one to two weeks. Your doctor will go through it with you in our rooms and explain what it means for follow-up, which may include referral to an oncologist.
Will I need chemotherapy or radiotherapy after the tumour is removed?
That depends on the type of tumour, its size and whether the margins were clear. Some sarcomas need radiotherapy to lower the chance of recurrence, and your doctor will coordinate this with a specialist if it applies to you.
