About this service
An anorectal biopsy is a day-theatre biopsy of the anal or rectal lining, taken to investigate unexplained bleeding, pain, or a suspicious growth, and it is available in Windhoek at Eastgate Clinic. A small tissue sample is taken from the anal or rectal wall and sent to a laboratory for analysis, helping your doctor reach an accurate diagnosis when symptoms are unclear or a growth needs to be checked.
The biopsy is performed in our on-site day theatre, usually under local, regional, or general anaesthesia depending on the area involved. Your doctor will discuss the results with you once they are available.
What to expect
- A brief examination of the anal and rectal area before the biopsy
- Local, regional, or general anaesthesia depending on the location of the tissue
- A small piece of the lining or growth is taken with biopsy forceps, and any bleeding point is controlled before you wake
- The tissue sample is sent away for laboratory analysis, with results following later
- Mild soreness or light bleeding afterwards is normal for a short time

Frequently asked questions
Why would my doctor want an anorectal biopsy?
A biopsy is suggested when bleeding, pain or a lump around the anus or rectum cannot be explained by examination alone, or when a growth needs to be identified. It gives a definite diagnosis so the right treatment can follow.
How long do anorectal biopsy results take?
Results usually come back within one to two weeks. Your doctor will go through them with you in our rooms and explain whether any further tests or treatment are needed.
Do I need bowel preparation before an anorectal biopsy?
Usually only a simple enema or a light diet the day before, if anything, and you will be told exactly what to do when you book. If general anaesthesia is planned you will also need to fast beforehand.
