About this service
Anal fistula surgery is performed in Windhoek to treat a fistula-in-ano, an abnormal tunnel that forms between the inside of the anal canal and the skin nearby, often after an abscess. It usually causes ongoing discharge, irritation and discomfort that doesn't settle on its own. During surgery the fistula tract is opened or excised so the area can heal properly from the inside out.

Frequently asked questions
Can an anal fistula heal without surgery?
Very rarely. A fistula is a lined tunnel that keeps draining, so it usually persists until it is surgically opened or removed. Antibiotics may calm a flare-up but do not close the tract.
Will anal fistula surgery affect bowel control?
Surgeons plan carefully to protect the sphincter muscle, and for a simple low fistula the risk to control is small. If the tract crosses more muscle, your surgeon may suggest a staged approach and will discuss this with you before theatre.
How long does an anal fistula wound take to heal?
The wound is left open to heal from the base, so expect several weeks and some discharge in the meantime. Regular dressing changes, warm baths and check-ups in our rooms help make sure it is closing properly.
